Government Relations and Public Policy

From its inception, Sills Cummis & Gross has been known in the region for its skill at meshing legal principles with public policy and government process for the benefit of its clients.  In fact, a ranking of “politically influential law firms” in New Jersey ranked the Firm number one among Am Law 200 law firms in the state and the website has described the Chair of our Government Relations & Public Policy Practice Group as someone who is “well liked by insiders on both sides of the aisle.”

Our attorneys know how to assist clients in the ways that government and business intersect on a broad range of legislative and regulatory matters.  As a result of their strong bipartisan relationships with policy makers in the legislative and executive branches, our attorneys know how to navigate the process of successfully effecting a change in the law or even crafting a new law when appropriate.  The same is true on the regulatory side of Trenton; our attorneys have developed a deep knowledge of how government works and a high level of credibility with department and agency officials through their service on countless advisory committees, task forces, and transition teams in one administration after another. The Chair of our Government Relations & Public Policy Practice Group founded and leads a coalition of two dozen statewide industry groups that has been responsible for many of the pro-business legislative and regulatory initiatives of the past several years.

The Firm is able to provide its clients with the unique value-added ability to go “beyond lawyering” in solving problems and resolving issues with state or local government outside the courtroom — by analyzing options and developing strategies for policy solutions, where possible, and then presenting those solutions to policymakers and high-level agency officials in Trenton or in county buildings or town halls across New Jersey.

For clients in a variety of industries regulated by the State of New Jersey, we carefully monitor legislative and agency developments to identify and pursue opportunities that advance our clients’ interests, and then work to ensure their timely implementation.  Likewise, we are watchful of legislative and agency initiatives that could adversely affect our clients’ interests, and then work to modify or defeat their adoption.  For a list of regulated industries that we routinely follow, click here.   Read Less
