As one of the NJBIZ 2026 ICON honorees, Sills Cummis Litigation Department Chair Joseph L. Buckley was highlighted in the NJBIZ ICON Honors supplement.
NJBIZ had this to say about Joseph L. Buckley:
Joseph Buckley is the chair of the litigation department at Sills Cummis & Gross P.C., where he has been a member since 1990. With over 35 years of first-chair trial experience in complex business litigation across federal and state courts, Buckley is one of New Jersey’s foremost litigators.
Buckley leads a 41-member litigation department and has served on the firm’s management committee since 1996. Under his leadership, the department earned Benchmark Litigation’s “New Jersey Firm of the Year” recognition for 10 consecutive years and the New Jersey Law Journal’s “General Litigation Department of the Year – Midsize” honors four times.
Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a civil trial attorney since 2011, Buckley has represented clients across industries including banking, technology, real estate, and insurance. Notable work includes representing the State of New Jersey in litigation tied to Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts, resulting in a settlement for approximately one-third of the opposing party’s demand. He also secured a multimillion-dollar verdict in a partnership dispute, with subsequent client recoveries surpassing $25 million.
Beyond his legal practice, Buckley serves on the boards of the Newark Museum of Art and the Newark YMCA, where he has chaired the Annual Leaders and Legends Scholarship Dinner for the past 20 years.
ICON honorees are New Jersey business leaders from a variety of industries across the State who are recognized for their notable success and demonstration of strong leadership both within and outside of their careers. According to NJBIZ, the ICON honorees “built today’s business community. And they continue to add to their legacies by adapting to new technologies and helping drive innovation. They know what they are doing and they know what it takes to get things done.” The NJBIZ ICON honorees were recognized at a ceremony at The Marigold in Somerset, NJ on May 19, 2026.
