The following Q&A with Robert Schiappacasse appeared in The National Law Journal’s Cannabis Law Trailblazers supplement.
What was the genesis of the idea/path that has made you a trailblazer?
Great clients! I had the privilege of representing a client in the sale of a sizable cannabis business located in Arizona and Nevada. It was through this experience many years ago that my understanding of the unique business and legal needs of clients in the cannabis industry was enhanced. My experience in the cannabis industry over the years allows me to provide a blend of sound legal advice and practical business advice to operators in numerous states on a variety of corporate, licensing and regulatory issues. I now chair the Sills Cummis multidisciplinary cannabis industry practice.
What sort of change has resulted from the concept?
Cannabis industry clients now have a one-stop law firm that can help them with all of their legal needs – from licensing and regulatory issues to transactional and real estate deals to litigation and intellectual property protections, among other areas. Our multidisciplinary cannabis industry team has represented clients in cannabis-related transactions and litigations in New Jersey, Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Maryland. We are well-versed in the industry and the associated laws and regulations.
What bearing will this have on the future?
We always make it a priority to understand our cannabis clients’ needs and business objectives. Partnering with our clients – whether already established in the industry or those seeking to enter – on business as well as legal issues allows us to proactively assist them as the cannabis industry continues to grow and evolve.
