NJBIZ Leaders in the Law Supplement – Max Crane, Managing Partner, Sills Cummis & Gross P.C.
What do you consider to be your greatest contribution to the success of your company/clients? Having spent over a decade as Managing Partner has given me a certain perspective. I started my tenure at the beginning of the Great Recession. More than a decade later, I am helping manage the firm through the Coronavirus pandemic. Managing Sills Cummis successfully, regardless of what is happening in the world, is among my greatest contributions. This not only positively influences the entire firm, but also our clients and the quality of service our attorneys are able to provide.
Describe a career challenge you overcame. Everyone experiences career challenges—they just come in different shapes and sizes. For me, advancing to the next steps of my career always stretched me, but taught me a lot. I learned listening is more important than talking, and that emotional intelligence is as important, if not more important, than “traditional” intelligence.
What types of charities, community involvement, or pro bono work are you involved in? Under my leadership, every year Sills Cummis supports dozens of organizations and charitable causes. Most recently, in celebration of the firm’s 50th anniversary this year, it is making additional donations to organizations serving the residents of Newark. On a personal level, I serve on the board of trustees of Students 2 Science, Inc., a nonprofit that motivates and educates students to pursue careers in STEM. I also served on the board of trustees of the Montclair Art Museum for over a decade.
