The 2004 National Institute on Criminal Tax Fraud, the annual gathering of the national tax-fraud bar, will meet this fall for the 21st consecutive year. The Institute will offer expert panelists from the defense bar, the government and the judiciary.
This year, the Institute will continue its focus on a number of increasingly important areas. Over the past several years, the government has dramatically expanded its treaty network and other arrangements to obtain admissible evidence abroad for the investigation and prosecution of criminal tax cases. Similarly, the IRS has greatly increased its ability to gather electronic evidence. Most recently, the Supreme Court’s decision in Blakely has raised significant questions regarding the application of the federal sentencing guidelines. The program also will provide nuts-and-bolts techniques for responding to a criminal tax-fraud investigation.
