Sills Cummis & Gross Proudly Announces Its 2017 Charles J. Walsh Scholar

July 12, 2017

Sills Cummis & Gross P.C. is pleased to announce that Brent McDonough, a first-year student at Rutgers School of Law – Newark, has been selected as the Firm’s 2017 Charles J. Walsh Scholar.  In 2006, Sills Cummis & Gross established the Scholarship Fund on behalf of the family, friends and colleagues of the late Judge Charles J. Walsh who, prior to his appointment to the Superior Court of New Jersey, Bergen County, was a valued Member of the Firm for 17 years.  Judge Walsh was also an adjunct professor at the law school.  The Charles J. Walsh Scholar Fund will provide financial and other assistance to Mr. McDonough in the form of scholarship support, summer internship stipends, mentorship during law school and career guidance.

Mr. McDonough was chosen for his academic achievements, leadership qualities, genuine interest in the law and commitment to community.  “I am truly honored to be this year’s Charles S. Walsh Scholar.  From what I understand, Judge Walsh was tenacious, shrewd, and brilliant, and that is exactly the type of attorney I aspire to be. As an intern at Sills Cummis & Gross, I have had the opportunity to work with some passionate and talented attorneys on a variety of interesting  assignments and I feel very fortunate to be here.”  Mr. McDonough graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY where he received a B.A., cum laude, majoring in International Relations and Spanish.  He played varsity lacrosse, varsity squash and studied abroad in Granada, Spain.  In 2010, he was accepted into the Bridge Summer Program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.  After graduating from college, Mr. McDonough  decided to pursue some professional experience before starting law school.  He wanted to learn more about the technology industry and was hired by Oracle in Burlington, MA. where he earned Team MVP in 2013 and exceeded 100% of sales quota in Oracle’s 2013, 2014 and 2016 fiscal years.  Gifted with athletic ability and a desire to give back, he served as head coach for the New England Select Lacrosse League coaching his team to league championship victories in both 2013 and 2016.  He now coaches Madison’s fifth grade boys from the Madison Youth Lacrosse.

Ron Chen, Dean of Rutgers School of Law-Newark, commented, "I knew and respected Judge Walsh from when he taught Advertising Law at Rutgers.  Brent McDonough's coursework and participation in our intellectual property, environmental, and finance and business law societies are a fitting tribute to the legacy of Judge Walsh."

Max Crane, Managing Partner, stated:  “It’s hard to believe that 11 years have gone by since we established the Charles J. Walsh Scholar Fund at Rutgers and we continue our commitment to the New Jersey law school community.  Mentoring young law students enriches the Firm as a whole and we are pleased to welcome Brent as a first year law clerk this summer.  It’s something that Chuck would have heartily endorsed.”
