Sills Cummis & Gross P.C. is pleased to announce that Erin Hodgson, a first-year student at Rutgers School of Law – Newark, has been selected as the Firm’s 2016 Charles J. Walsh Scholar. In 2006, Sills Cummis & Gross established the Scholarship Fund on behalf of the family, friends and colleagues of the late Judge Charles J. Walsh who, prior to his appointment to the Superior Court of New Jersey, Bergen County, was a valued Member of the Firm for 17 years. Judge Walsh was also an adjunct professor at the law school. The Charles J. Walsh Scholar Fund will provide financial and other assistance to Ms. Hodgson in the form of scholarship support, summer internship stipends, mentorship during law school and career guidance.
Ms. Hodgson was chosen for her academic promise, leadership qualities as well as her humanity. She stated, “I am truly honored to have received the Charles Walsh Scholarship. I did not expect to get the chance to intern with a firm like Sills Cummis & Gross after only my first year of law school but I have loved every second of my time here. Interning here has afforded me the opportunity to work with incredible attorneys and apply what I’ve learned at Rutgers across a range of interesting projects.” Ms. Hodgson received a B.A. in Sociology, summa cum laude, from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. Her strong sense of community involvement included interning at the Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Morris County; serving as a Fellow for The Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress in San José, Costa Rico; and working as a Response Team Coordinator for the Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Crisis Center in Washington, D.C.
Ron Chen, Dean of Rutgers School of Law-Newark, commented, "I have fond memories of Judge Walsh from when he taught Advertising Law at Rutgers. Erin Hodgson's coursework, participation in the Women's Law Forum and the Volunteer Lawyers for Justice are a fitting tribute to the legacy of Judge Walsh." Max Crane, Managing Partner, stated: “Our commitment to the New Jersey law school community continues with our tenth Charles J. Walsh Scholar. Mentoring young law students enriches the Firm as a whole and we are pleased to welcome Erin as a first year law clerk this summer. It’s something that Chuck would have heartily endorsed.”
